> Furfuryl alcohol

Furfuryl alcohol is an organic compound containing a furan group and a hydroxymethyl group. It polymerizes in the presence of an acid The great use of furfuryl alcohol is the agglomeration of siliceous foundry sand. For this use, the dry sand is mixed with a small amount of furfuryl alcohol in which at the last minute a few percent of diluted phosphoric acid has been added. The sand is then quickly packed into shape. The alcohol and the acid react quickly to give a thermosetting polymer which firmly bonds the sand and which is able to withstand the temperature of the casting for a few seconds, then breaks up while the cast has had time to solidify .The débourrage or destruction of the mold is thus greatly facilitated
